CFP: WSECS 2019 - "The Global Eighteenth Century"

The 2019 meeting of the Western Society for Eighteenth-Century Studies will take place on February 15-16, 2019, at Arizona State University, we have been hard at work assembling some of the conference programming . . . so here is an updated CFP for your consideration.

The conference will be centered around the theme, “The Global Eighteenth Century” and will feature a plenary panel to debate the question, “What Is a ‘Global Eighteenth Century’?” Felicity Nussbaum (English, UCLA), Satoko Shimazaki (East Asian Languages and Cultures, USC), and Claudia Brown (Art History, ASU) have already been confirmed as plenary panelists, with more speakers to be added soon.

As part of our cross-disciplinary conference program, we are also excited to announce that we have partnered with ASU’s Herberger Institute for Design and the Arts to include their production of Händel’s Xerxes as an optional evening event on Saturday, 2/16; discounted tickets will be available as an add-on during registration. As a bonus, the performance will be preceded by a special panel, open to all conference attendees, that will include stage director Professor Dale Dreyfoos and Herberger’s Artistic Director of Music Theatre and Opera, Brian DeMaris.

Our goals for the conference are several: to explore global connections and developments across the eighteenth century; to emphasize the importance of attending to such connections and developments in our research and teaching; to highlight the work that is already being done in this vein and to create an environment that encourages more of it in the future; and for that purpose, to bring together fields of eighteenth-century and early modern study that do not normally talk to each other, or not sufficiently so.

We therefore invite submission of proposals for individual papers as well as ready-formed panels or roundtables; proposals that fit the conference theme are particularly encouraged, but the conference is open to presentations on all aspects of eighteenth-century studies. We invite scholars from all disciplines on all aspects of eighteenth-century culture. We seek to encourage proposals in particular from scholars interested in a broad range of disciplines representing the whole of the world, including the music, art, history, literature, economies, and cultures of Asia, Africa, and South America.

For full consideration, please send a 250-word abstract by October 1, 2018, to organizers Sören Hammerschmidt (Soren.Hammerschmidt@asu.edu), Young Oh (youngoh@asu.edu), and Victoria Thompson (Victoria.Thompson@asu.edu); proposals for complete panels and roundtables should also include a short rationale and goals for the panel.
