The Department of Art and Art History at William & Mary seeks applications for a tenure-track position at either the Associate or Full Professor level with a specialization in Colonial/Indigenous Art History (pre-1800) to begin August 10, 2019. This endowed position will be entitled the Jane Williams Mahoney Professor (or Associate Professor) of Art History. We are interested in individuals with research and teaching expertise in areas such as arts of colonial Latin America, Africa or the African Diaspora, and/or the Pacific world. This position is crucial to our department’s increasingly global perspective. Preference will be given to candidates who are able to contribute to our new tracks in Critical Curatorial Studies and Built Environment Studies as well as our regular art history courses. The applicant is expected to demonstrate and maintain an active research program through publications, participation in national and international conferences, external grants, and other scholarly activities that inspire a highly motivated undergraduate student body as well as M.A./Ph.D. students in related programs and departments. Teaching expectation is two courses per semester. Successful applicants must possess the skills to teach compelling introductory courses and other lecture and seminar-style courses in their areas of specialization, advise undergraduates and graduate students, and generally contribute to the intellectual life of the institution.
Required Qualifications: Applicants must hold a Ph.D. in Art History.
Preferred Qualifications: A substantial record of postdoctoral publications, ongoing research, and experience in teaching and mentoring students at the university level. Preference will be given to candidates who are able to contribute to our new tracks in Critical Curatorial Studies and Built Environment Studies, our regular art history courses, and who have a demonstrable interest in engaging diverse people and perspectives.
